Topsoil Calculator
Topsoil Calculator estimates how much topsoil you need in cubic yards, cubic feet, bags, and cost for lawns, garden beds, raised beds, leveling, and landscaping projects.
- Calculate cubic yards
- Estimate bag count
- Check soil weight
- Plan project cost
How to Use the Topsoil Calculator
Enter dimensions
Measure the project length, width, and desired topsoil depth for the area you want to cover.
Select soil options
Choose a topsoil density, bag size, and overage amount based on your project and supplier details.
Review results
Check cubic yards for bulk delivery, bag count for small jobs, and estimated cost for budgeting.
How to Calculate Topsoil
Find the project volume, convert it to cubic yards, and then estimate bags, tons, or cost based on the selected soil settings.
To calculate topsoil needed, multiply length by width by depth using consistent units. If your measurements are in feet, the result gives cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards for bulk topsoil ordering.
If you are buying bagged topsoil instead of bulk soil, divide the total cubic feet by the bag size. The topsoil weight can vary depending on density, moisture, and soil blend.
Quick formulas
- Cubic Feet = Length × Width × Depth
- Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
- Bag Count = Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Size
- Weight = Cubic Feet × Soil Density
How Much Topsoil Do I Need?
The amount of topsoil needed depends on project size and depth.
A thin topdressing layer uses much less soil than a new lawn base or deep garden bed. Soilutions recommends roughly 0.5 to 1 inch for topdressing an existing lawn and around 4 to 6 inches for new seed or sod projects using topsoil.
For raised beds and planting areas, the required depth is often greater, so cubic yards and bag count can rise quickly.
Topsoil Coverage Guide
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so coverage depends entirely on depth. CalculatorSoup notes that one cubic yard is about 18 bags of 1.5 cubic feet each or about 14 bags of 2.0 cubic feet each.
- 1 cubic yard at 1 inch deep covers about 324 square feet.
- 1 cubic yard at 2 inches deep covers about 162 square feet.
- 1 cubic yard at 3 inches deep covers about 108 square feet.
- 1 cubic yard at 4 inches deep covers about 81 square feet.
These rule-of-thumb examples help users quickly compare bulk topsoil and bagged topsoil for patching, leveling, lawn repair, and garden preparation.
Topsoil Bags vs Bulk Topsoil
Bagged topsoil works well for small repairs and spot applications, while bulk topsoil is usually more practical for larger lawn and landscaping projects. Many U.S. planning estimates use around 0.75 cubic feet per bag for topsoil.
If a project requires several cubic yards, bulk delivery is often more practical than buying a large number of small bags.
Topsoil Weight and Density
Topsoil is commonly sold by volume, but weight is useful for planning delivery and comparing product types.
- Loose topsoil: about 75 lb/ft³.
- Standard topsoil: about 100 lb/ft³.
- Compacted topsoil: about 125 lb/ft³.
Weight can vary with moisture content, organic matter, and soil blend, so the calculator result should be used as a practical estimate unless your supplier provides a specific density.
Common Topsoil Calculator Uses
Topsoil calculators are commonly used for lawns, gardens, raised beds, and yard leveling.
Lawns
Estimate topsoil for lawn repair, topdressing, low spots, reseeding, and new lawn preparation.
Gardens
Plan topsoil volume for vegetable gardens, flower beds, and seasonal planting areas.
Raised Beds
Calculate deeper soil volumes for raised bed construction and layered soil filling projects.
Yard Leveling
Estimate bulk topsoil needed for grading, filling uneven areas, and improving drainage flow.
Topsoil Cost Estimate
Use local price per cubic yard or price per bag. Local prices vary by soil quality, screening, compost blend, delivery distance, and regional market conditions.Topsoil.com -“Find the Best Mulch, Landscape, and Topsoil Suppliers in the USA.
