Gravel Calculator

Gravel Calculator Estimates how much gravel you need in cubic yards, cubic feet, and tons for driveways, walkways, drainage, landscaping, and patio base projects.

  • Calculate cubic yards
  • Estimate gravel tons
  • Adjust for depth and density
  • Include cost estimate

How to Use the Gravel Calculator

1

Enter dimensions

Measure the project length, width, and gravel depth using the units shown in the calculator.

2

Select gravel type

Choose a gravel type or use a custom density if your supplier gives you an exact value.

3

Review estimate

Check cubic yards, tons, and total cost so you can order enough material with less waste.

How to Calculate Gravel

Gravel estimates generally start with project volume and then convert that volume into cubic yards and tons based on density, which is the same calculation pattern used by leading gravel calculator pages.

To estimate gravel, multiply length by width by depth to get total volume. If the dimensions are entered in feet, divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. Then multiply cubic yards by gravel density to estimate tons.

Quick formulas

  • Volume = Length × Width × Depth
  • Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
  • Tons = Cubic Yards × Density
  • Order Total = Base Amount + Overage

Common Gravel Calculator Uses

D

Driveways

Estimate gravel needed for residential driveways, parking areas, and compacted base layers.

P

Paths & Patios

Plan depth and gravel coverage for walkways, garden paths, and patio base preparation.

R

Drainage

Use gravel estimates for French drains, trenches, and erosion-control projects around foundations.

L

Landscaping

Calculate decorative gravel for beds, borders, xeriscaping, and low-maintenance ground cover.

Gravel Calculator FAQ

What is the formula for calculating gravel?
Multiply length by width by depth to find volume, convert that volume into cubic yards, and then multiply cubic yards by gravel density to estimate tons.
How much does 1 ton of gravel cover?
Coverage depends on density and depth. A thinner layer covers more square footage, while a deeper layer covers less area.
How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?
The answer depends on material density. Standard gravel estimates often use a range rather than one fixed number because different gravel types weigh differently.
How deep should gravel be for a driveway?
The right depth depends on project type and use, but driveway gravel is often deeper than decorative landscaping gravel because it needs to support vehicle traffic.
Is gravel sold by the ton or by the yard?
Both are common. Many suppliers quote larger orders by the ton, while some projects may also be priced by the cubic yard.
